Rare Antique Sharps & Hankins Model 1861 Rifle

Rare Sharps & Hankins Model 1861 .52 caliber Rifle . The round barrel measures 32 3/4" long with blade site at the muzzle and adjustable rear site. A saber bayonet lug is mounted on the underside of barrel near the muzzle. Bore is bright and clean with good rifling. Barrel has smooth dark brown patina. Frame shows even wear with a few light scratches. Stamped "SHARPS PATENT 1859" on left and "SHARPS/ & / HANKINS / PHILADA" on right side of frame. Hammer with intregal firing pin and sliding safety on the left side. Breech tang has serial number 172 stamped on it. All mechanics are strong and crisp. Two piece walnut stock in good condition with only minor scrapes and nicks. It is estimated that less than 700 of these rifles were manufactured; 600 of them were delivered to the Navy in 1862 and used primarily by the Marine guards aboard ships. From the serial number 172, this rifle was likely part of the second batch of rifles delivered to the New York Navy Yard in April 1862. The Sharps & Hankins Model 1861 rifle, designed by Christian Sharps in 1861, is unique for its sliding breech action and drop-block mechanism, making it a single-shot, breech-loading rifle, which was highly regarded for its accuracy and reliability.
