Navajo Strom Pattern Rug J.B. Moore, Ca 1940s
A finely woven Navajo rug featuring the iconic "Storm Pattern" design, a style popularized by trader J.B. Moore at the Crystal Trading Post in the early 20th century. The design elements are rich in symbolism, including a central rectangle (representing the Lake of Emergence or a hogan) connected by zigzag "lightning bolts" to four corner elements (symbolizing the four sacred mountains). The upper and lower ends feature small, six-legged diamond motifs, often referred to as "water bugs," which are associated with the coming of rain.
The rug displays a palette of natural and aniline dyes, utilizing shades of brown, grey, black, cream, and accents of red. The weave is tight and consistent, characteristic of mid-20th century craftsmanship. A striking example of DinÈ weaving, this powerful "Storm Pattern" rug offers both historical significance and exceptional visual impact.
