Jose Antonio de Padilla, The Virgin Lamenting the Dead Christ with Angels Symbols of Passion
Jose Antonio de Padilla (b. Acatzingo, Puebla; active Ca. 1752 - 1798), "The Virgin Lamenting the Dead Christ with Angels Holding Symbols of the Passion", Oil on copper, 10 2/3" x 13 2/3", Frame: 18 1/4" x 15 1/2", Of the two Padilla brother-painters (the other named Cayetano), Jose Antonio is the more distinguished artist. Jose Antonio is known for paintings of the Guadalupe, one of which was taken by a priest in the nineteenth century to the Mission Santa Barbara in California. His major work is a series of paintings now in Tepotzotlan on the life of the Jesuit Saint Stanislaus Kostka. Jose Antonio's style is recognizable, the figures being delicate, with rounded faces, close-set eyes, and tiny noses and mouths. Attributions confirmed by Dr. Donna Pierce, Former Curator of Spanish Colonial Art at the Denver Art Museum (retired) on May 13, 2024
