RARE Plains War Shield, 1850-60s
Plains war shield constructed of two 1/8" thick sheets of native tanned ox or mule hide sewn together about the perimeter with thick hide strands. The design on the front of the shield is typical of Plains indian with a straight bar having a green pigment color and multiple red painted lines. Often times the bar would mean "protection" or "earth and land". In Plains Indian cultures, a warrior's shield held significant importance as both physical survival and spiritual well-being. The designs and symbols painted on the shield were often based on visions experienced by the warrior, reflecting their unique spiritual journey and connection to the spirit world. Provenace: Ex. Private New Mexico Collector, Ex. Sherwoods Spirit of America, NM. Ca. 1850-1860
