Oscar E. Berninghaus was born St. Louis MO in 1874. He was a painter, muralist, and lithographer, specializing in western subjects. For many years, he spent summers in Taos and winter months in St Louis where he designed the costumes and floats for the Veiled Prophet Parade, a famous annual event in St. Louis. "Alaska" was a float desing in the 1931 parade. He visited Taos regularly and settled there in 1925 where he was a founder in 1898 of the Taos Society of Artists.
