Very Early Hopi Redware Pottery Cylinder
This elegant and finely crafted Hopi redware cylinder vase is a striking example of the Sikyatki Revival pottery movement. The revival was pioneered by famed potter Nampeyo (c. 1859ñ1942) and other artisans who looked to designs from the prehistoric Sikyatki village for inspiration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The cylindrical form, while not a traditional prehistoric Hopi shape, was a popular revival style. The vessel's surface features a burnished red slip, over which bold black and white designs have been painted. The stylized linear and curvilinear patterns depicting abstract elements, which are characteristic of the Sikyatki style. This piece showcases a masterful control of line and composition, with the design harmoniously wrapping around the form.
