Overview:
A magnificent and large Zia Pueblo 4-Color Storage Jar, ca. 1890s, created by a highly skilled potter for Pueblo home use. Standing 16 ¾ inches tall and 17 inches in diameter, this rare example displays the artistry and cultural depth of Zia pottery at the turn of the century.

 

Design Features:

  • Encircling rosette and leaf medallions, linked by stepped red rain-cloud motifs

  • Neck band with diagonally hatched rain lines symbolizing rain and fertility

  • Rounded upper body and shoulder, balanced and masterfully proportioned

  • Polychrome design using traditional Zia mineral paints in four distinct colors

 

Condition:
Very good condition with ethnographic surface wear consistent with age and use. Minor chips and cracks, no restoration — preserved in original condition.

 

Cultural Significance:
Zia pottery of this scale and detail was rarely made for everyday use. This jar represents both utilitarian function and ceremonial artistry, making it a prized collector’s piece.
