San Ildefonso Jar, Maria Martinez (b.1887 - d.1980) and Popovi Da (b.1923 - d.1971) Highly polished red and sienna with painted avanyu encircling neck and shoulder of jar. Maria Martinez is unquestionably the most famous and most influential of all Pueblo potters. She created this pot with her son, Popovi Da who perfected the gunmetal finish. The avanyu design was originated from a story where the water serpent saved the village from a flood
