Large Cochiti Polychrome Pot, ca. 1890s
This large Cochiti polychrome pot, dating to the 1890s, is a fine example of late 19th-century Pueblo pottery. Hand-coiled with a wide, rounded body and slightly flared rim, the jar is decorated in a bold black-on-cream design with red accents, characteristic of Cochiti ceramic traditions of the era. The motifs include sweeping curvilinear forms and abstracted elements, arranged with striking balance across the vessel’s surface.
Measuring over 12 inches in both height and diameter, this jar stands out for its impressive scale and visual presence. The surface shows natural age patina consistent with use, but the pot remains in excellent condition with no restoration.
A rare piece of 19th-century Cochiti craftsmanship, this jar exemplifies the artistry and cultural heritage of the Pueblo potters of New Mexico.
